Girls: West 77, East 76

By Dave Rogahn

Nicholle Aston (Louisville) hit a 3-pointer from the left corner on an inbounds play at the final buzzer, lifting the West to a dramatic 77-76 win in the 2012 War on the Floor Future Stars girls' game Saturday night at El Camino Real HS in Woodland Hills.

Aston led all scorers with 19 points, including 5 three-pointers, but saved her best for last to lift her West team to the victory in a game that was extremely evenly-played from start to finish.

Neither team led by more than nine points the entire game. The West led, 38-33, at the half and pushed the lead to 45-36 after a basket by Robyn Brown (Chaminade) on a fast break after a pass from Beth Mounier (Oaks Christian) early in the second half.

The East rallied to tie the score at 50 on a jumper by Danielle Ward (Granada Hills) with just over 11 minutes left. The lead went back and forth the rest of the game, with the East taking a 75-71 lead after a putback basket by Hannah Green (West Ranch) with 1:20 left.

Aston hit a 3-pointer to get her team within a point at 75-74. Green split two free throws with 10.9 seconds left to make it 76-74. The West had plenty of time to tie the score, but the play began to stall as time wound down. Head Coach Kelli DiMuro (Chaminade) called timeout with 2.1 seconds left, just before Aston released a 3-point shot that bounced off the rim and out.

After the timeout, however, Aston got another shot and did not miss. She took the inbounds pass from Cora Chan (El Camino Real) and swished the shot through the net as the buzzer sounded, winning the game in most dramatic fashion.

Aston finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-for-10 from the floor and added 7 rebounds. Mounier had 12 points, all in the first half, and though she's just 5-8 grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out a game-high 5 assists. Meghan McIntyre (Oaks Christian) had 10 points while Brown and Mi'Chael Wright (Chaminade) had 9 points each; Wright also had 8 rebounds.

For the East, Natalie Florescu (Harvard-Westlake) had 16 points, including 4 threes, plus 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Green had 12 points and 7 rebounds, and Aysia Shellmire (Burroughs) had 10 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 assists and 2 steals.

At halftime, there was a 3-point shooting contest and Kristine Nishida (Granada Hills) made 13 baskets in each round to edge Meghan McIntyre (Oaks Christian) in the final round.

Nishida and McIntyre each made 13 shots in the first round, while Natalie Florescu (Harvard-Westlake) had 12 and Cora Chan (El Camino Real) had 11. But in the final round, Nishida again made 13 while McIntyre made just 8, so Nishida came away with the title.
