The Second Annual Joseph Frazier Benefit Showcase took place September 30th at Calabasas High School, raising money and spirits for the injured Calabasas assistant coach and former CS Northridge standout. Many of the top teams from the San Fernando Valley and beyond were on hand for a great day of basketball for a great cause.

Here is the sixth of seven free game reports on the event:

6:45 pm: Oak Park 74, Crespi 72

By Dave Rogahn

Ron Lee scored 26 points and added 6 assists, and J.D. Slajchert scored on a putback of one of his misses with 9.5 seconds left for a key basket in Oak Park's two-point win over Crespi in the penultimate game of the 2nd Annual Joseph Frazier Benefit Showcase.

It was a very well-played game, with a veritable plethora of 3-pointers (21) and very few turnovers (23) for a summer game. Oak Park took a 12-point lead midway through the first half, but Crespi closed the gap to a single point just a few minutes later and neither team led by more than seven points in the second half.

Oak Park jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, only to see Crespi cut the margin to three points at 16-13. Then Oak Park went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-13 lead after a steal & lay-up by Slajchert midway through the first half.

Crespi narrowed the gap to a single point at 31-30 at halftime, and took a 33-31 lead in the opening minute of the second half after a 3-pointer by University of Virginia-bound London Perrantes. Incoming freshman Max Heidegger hit consecutive 3-pointers a bit later to give Crespi a 45-38 lead with just over 11 minutes left.

Oak Park tied the score at 51 after a 3-pointer by Michael Alvarez, and the lead went back and forth for the next several minutes. Alvarez hit another three to break a 61-all tie with 4:06 left, and Oak Park ended up holding a narrow lead the rest of the way.

But Crespi stayed close, and got within a point on a pair of free throws by Perrantes with 51.7 seconds left that made it 69-68. Lee made two free throws for Oak Park with 35.9 seconds left to make it 71-68, but Perrantes fed D.J. Ussery for a basket that brought Crespi within a point again at 71-70.

Lee had a chance to restore the 3-point lead moments later, but missed a contested lay-up. However, Slajchert was there to score after the rebound, and it worked out even better for Oak Park as he was fouled on the play. He made the resulting free throw with 9.5 seconds left to make it 74-70. Crespi got one last basket from Perrantes in the final second or so, and at first it looked like Crespi might have one last chance as the clock stopped. However, game officials quickly corrected the mistake, ruling that time had run out despite the clock stopping, ending the game.

Lee led Oak Park with his 26 points, and he also had a game-high 6 assists. Slajchert had 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Alvarez came off the bench for 11 points, including 3 three-pointers. Kaelan Hicks added 8 points and 8 rebounds.

For Crespi, Perrantes led all scorers with 30 points, including 4 threes, while adding 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Heidegger put on a show off the bench with his shooting and finished with 23 points, including 4 threes. Ussery had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal.
