The Second Annual Joseph Frazier Benefit Showcase took place September 30th at Calabasas High School, raising money and spirits for the injured Calabasas assistant coach and former CS Northridge standout. Many of the top teams from the San Fernando Valley and beyond were on hand for a great day of basketball for a great cause.

Here is the seventh of seven free game reports on the event:

8 pm: El Camino Real 76, Calabasas 49

By Dave Rogahn

In the marquee attraction of the day, El Camino Real left little doubt as to who deserves the preseason #1 ranking in the San Fernando Valley area with a most impressive rout of host Calabasas in the 2nd Annual Joseph Frazier Benefit Showcase Sunday evening.

Before the game, Ryan Hollins, a current L.A. Clipper and Muir HS teammate of Frazier, and Joseph's mom stood at center court to update the crowd on his condition and receive the support of everyone in attendance. She relayed the hopeful news that his recovery continues and he might be transferred home in the near future.

Then the game started, and Calabasas jumped out to an early 8-7 lead on the strength of Max Hoetzel, who made his first three shots of the game including a pair of three-pointers.

But after that, El Camino Real went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game, and led the rest of the way. Cooper Pedati finally ended the drought with a 3-pointer, but El Camino Real pushed the lead to 26-11 when Maleke Haynes fed Hawaii signee Michael Thomas with a nifty behind-the-back pass for a dunk. The lead reached 20 points at 38-18 late in the first half.

Calabasas narrowed the gap to 14 points at halftime, and cut the deficit to ten points in the first four-plus minutes of the second half. A basket by Christian Foster off a pass from Hoetzel made it 44-34 with 11:24 left in the game.

But then El Camino Real pulled away for good. A 3-pointer by Mason Pollack pushed the lead to 16 points at 52-36. Two free throws by Haynes made it 56-38. A Haynes 3-pointer made it 61-42. Then Haynes stole a pass in the Calabasas backcourt and missed a lay-up, but Julian Richardson was there for the putback to make it 63-42, and the rout was on.

Five players scored in double digits for El Camino Real, led by Thomas, who had 17 points plus 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Haynes had 14 points, 5 assists and 4 steals, and Richardson had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Pollack and Evan Wardlow scored 10 points each.

For Calabasas, Hoetzel had team-highs of 16 points and 7 rebounds, but he was the only player for Calabasas to score in double figures. Jeremy Lieberman had 9 points and dished out a team-best 5 assists.
