January 12, 2013After playing four highly competitive games against Jesuit last year, Sheldon returned to its home gym to a 69-42 win over the Marauders. Senior guard Darin Johnson finished with 17 points and the Huskies made 12 threes to force the contest into a running clock.
Sheldon (11-4) led 31-14 after the first quarter and gave up just three points in the third quarter. The Huskies were able to frustrate Jesuit (9-9) with its full court press and shoot over the zone defense with Darin Johnson and Dakarai Allen getting open looks on the wings. The Marauders got 15 points from junior post Brady Anderson, but were presented with too many mismatches on both ends in this one.
Dakarai Allen 6-foot-6 SF Sheldon (2013): Allen is a very good perimeter defender and at the front of Sheldon's disruptive press. He can shut down an opponent's top perimeter threat, but also perform well in the team defense concept. He finished with numerous deflections with five steals and three blocks. He can get to the basket off the bounce and is a willing passer. His shot can be more consistent, but it has improved in knocking down a trio of threes. He is signed to San Diego State.
Darin Johnson 6-foot-5 W Sheldon (2013): With a Washington assistant coach in attendance, Johnson scored a game high 17 points with a pair of three pointers and a number of quality finishes inside. Gaining his eligibility after New Year's, the Washington signee is a smooth athlete with a good blend of power and quickness. He went 2-for-8 from long range in the win. Defensively, he was tasked with guarding 2014 3-star forward Lake Lutes in the half court and did a quality job.
Antonio Lewis 6-foot-1 F Sheldon (2013): When teams are as talented as Sheldon, there always seems to be an unsung hero who keeps things going. Lewis is that for the Huskies. He had four early steals, competed well for rebounds and made two threes as part of his 10 points. Lewis should become a nice JC pick-up after this season.
Ryan Manning 6-foot-6 F Sheldon (2013): Manning stretches the floor with his size in making a pair of corner threes. He can also run the floor in transition and finish with power at the rim. The 2-star senior finished with 14 points and fought for position well at points in post defense. Manning is best suited as a combo forward at the Division II level where he can best use his versatility.
D'Erryl Williams 6-foot-4 CG Sheldon (2013): The San Diego State signee was neutralized some due to the zone defense, but contributed seven points with his trademark rebounding, passing and toughness. He has good vision and handles well in a crowd. His ability to keep defenses' honest with a jumper will be telling going forward for Williams. He is also signed to San Diego State.
Brady Anderson 6-foot-8 Post Jesuit (2014): Anderson is a thin post prospect, but displayed good hands against Sheldon and had two nice baby hooks. He also had two offensive rebound put backs. Anderson needs to develop strength to better hold his position and become a defensive presence inside, but he was a bright spot for the Marauders.
Lake Lutes 6-foot-6 SF Jesuit (2014): The 3-star Lutes was quiet with five points and a couple of rebounds. Lutes plays off the ball manning one of the corner spots, where he can shoot or drive baseline, or can work his own dribble from the top. He was 0-for-2 from deep and missed three shots inside, but had a nice right handed drive late. Lutes has had some big games this year, but never found his rhythm in this one.
