Cathedral HS 96, High Desert Prep 93

Josh Brown poured in 40 points for Cathedral HS to lead his team to a narrow victory with the most exciting performance of the day in the most entertaining game of the day in the 2013 West Coast Prep Championships.

It might have been just the seventh-place game, but it was quite a show as the teams raced back and forth for 40 minutes, scoring nearly 200 points between them. The teams combined for 169 field goal attempts and 55 free throws - as well as 50 turnovers - and neither team ever led by more than 10 points.

That 10-point lead came early, as Cathedral jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game. But High Desert Prep, a team of players mostly from Toronto Canada, quickly recovered from the wobbly start and cut the margin to a single point at 10-9.

And from then on, the teams traded basket and points the remainder of the game. Cathedral pushed out to an 8-point lead at 40-32 with just over 4 minutes left in the first half, but High Desert rallied to take a 44-43 lead in the final minute before the break. Lorel Johnson scored on a driving lay-up moments later to give Cathedral a 45-44 lead at intermission.

The second half was more of the same, as the teams traded scores and the lead went back and forth until Johnson broke an 82-82 tie with a free throw with 3:08 to play. Then Brown made two free throws after a steal by Johnson to make it 85-82. Johnson hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 88-82 with 2:10 left.

High Desert rallied within three points, but by then were running short of players. The squad had just 8 players to start, and guard Vontae Moncriefe fouled out early in the second half after being assessed a technical foul. By the two-minute mark, four other players had four fouls each.

But High Desert had no alternative but to foul in the final minute, which sent their top two scorers, Jamaal Potopsingh and Adrian Brown, to the bench with their 5th fouls and Cathedral's Josh Brown to the line for free throws. The 5-11 senior guard made four free throws in the final 23.4 seconds to clinch the win for the Phantoms and push his point total to 40.

Brown's 40 points were easily the best of the day, but he also added a game-high 7 assists and 6 steals. Johnson came off the bench for 19 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jeffrey Bryant had 13 points and Jean-Christophe Bores had 8 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

For High Desert, Potopsingh had a team-high 32 points while adding 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and a steal. Adrian Brown had 21 points, a game-high 17 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Jameel Brown had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, and Paul Watson came off the bench for 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.
