August 17, 2013Clayton Valley first baseman Garrett Nelson capped his recruitment before his senior season with a verbal to Long Beach State.
"I liked the area of Long Beach as well as the campus," said Nelson. "I like the way the baseball program is run and the desire to win [Head] Coach [Troy] Buckley brings. Long Beach State was all around a great fit for what they could provide baseball wise and academically."
During the past season at Clayton Valley, Nelson held a .398 batting average with 19 RBIs, three doubles, two triples, and a home run. He was also a threat on the base paths, as he stole 11 bases on 11 attempts.
Nelson also played well at the Bay Area World Series this summer at Santa Clara University. He fielded his position well and made the most of his one hit as he pulled the ball over the right field wall for a home run.
"BAWS was a great opportunity to play the best in the bay in front of college coaches," Nelson added. "I was pleased with my defense there but did not show as well as I hoped in the batters box. I was grateful to be invited and have the opportunity to play in this showing."
Surprisingly, Long Beach State was the only school to offer at the time of Nelson's commitment, although he was also in contact with Cal State Northridge and San Jose State. He only needed one unofficial visit to Long Beach State to make his decision.
The 6-foot-1, 170 pounder isn't the typical power hitting first baseman seen in today's game, but Nelson recognizes his strengths and brings a different skill set to the position.
"My work ethic is probably the greatest attribute but my defense is up there too. Also my ability to drive gaps with plus speed," said Nelson.
On the areas to improve, he added, "Staying out of the air as much hitting and to drive more balls. Also to stay in the weight room as much as I can in the next year."
Long Beach State added a good early addition to their 2014 class in Nelson. With a early commitment out of the way, look for Nelson to have a big senior season.
