August 29, 2013Berkeley forward Desire Finnie used the summer to up her recruiting stock. With heavy interest coming from the Pac-12, the 3-star prospect committed to Pacific on Friday. NCP caught up with her to talk about her decision.
"I chose UOP for their academics. They have a good pharmacist (program) and I want to be a pharmacist. It's also close to home and my family liked the school too," Finnie said. "I was also their first pick they wanted. It made me want to go there because they wanted me."
Finnie chose the Tigers over Washington, Oregon and USC and becomes the third NorCal player to commit to head coach Lynne Roberts. She will join CA Ballaz teammate Najah Queenland and Sacred Heart Cathedral/Cal Stars Nike Elite guard GeAnna Summers-Luaulu.
"They kind of grew on me over the summer. The more I talked to them, the more I became comfortable with the coaching staff," Finnie said. "The staff is great. I already felt I was family with the team. I became real close with them."
After picking up the offer about two weeks ago, she unofficially visited the Stockton campus on Friday. She is planning on taking her official visit in October, but no date has been set.
Pacific recently announced it will be rejoining the West Coast Conference starting in the 2013-2014 season after winning the Big West Conference women's basketball title and establishing a new school record with 27 wins in 2013.
Ranked No. 13 in the pre-summer rankings, Finnie is a high motor player who has showed steady improvement in her offensive game. She finishes well inside and has range to 10-12 feet. Finnie rebounds well and brings versatility.
