October 7, 2013There were no changes at the top after week five as De La Salle produced an impressive showing against Servite. We also take a look at Top 20 wins for Del Oro and Deer Valley as well as big league games to watch this Friday.
NCP Football Top 20
After giving up more than 400 yards on the ground against De La Salle and Grant, Del Oro's defense tightened up in a 24-14 homecoming win over St. Mary's-Stockton. It was the second win over NCP Top 20 competition for the Golden Eagles. Dylan Kainrath had 30 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns and now has 55 total carries the past two weeks.
No. 8 Del Oro travels to Woodcreek and hosts Roseville on October 18 before welcoming No. 4 Granite Bay to Loomis on October 25.
St. Mary's will look for continued dominance in the Tri-City Athletic League as it opens up against Tokay on Friday. The Rams have scored 13 and 14 points in their two losses this season.
Is Deer Valley the BVAL favorite?
Based on the rankings, Deer Valley enters league play as the favorite followed by Pittsburg and Freedom. The Wolverines finished non-league at 5-0 after beating Vacaville 45-34 behind the playmaking of quarterback Nsimba Webster and linebacker Malik Hutchings.
Deer Valley will host 5-star running back Joe Mixon and Freedom this week and will face Pittsburg on November 1. The Wolverines were the preseason pick in the Bay Valley Athletic League and are holding firm so far.
On the other sideline, Vacaville falls to 2-3 after playing four teams in the NCP Top 20. After going with Napa in the preseason for the Monticello Empire League race, Vacaville has returned to its usual spot with wins over No. 19 Valley Christian-San Jose and Lincoln-Stockton.
League showdowns from Folsom to San Jose
There are plenty of big league matchups with Top 20 implications to watch in week six. No. 2 Folsom hosts No. 15 Oak Ridge in the Delta River League after both teams made section finals in 2012. In the East Bay Athletic League, No. 16 Foothill will look to pick up a signature win as it travels to California. The Grizzlies were the preseason pick in the EBAL.
Down in the West Catholic Athletic League, newly ranked Mitty will face No. 19 Valley Christian-San Jose. Both teams will look to grind it out on the ground, but which passing game can produce a few big plays could be the winner. Mitty and Valley Christian have wins over De Anza league favorites Palo Alto and Milpitas respectively.
