October 18, 2013A varsity mainstay since her freshman year, Sacramento's Ayanna Edwards drew interest from numerous programs before taking her official visit to Tempe. She was sold on Arizona State and committed to the Sun Devils.
The 6-foot-4 Edwards verbally committed to Arizona State the same weekend of her visit. The post is ranked No. 11 as a 4-star prospect in the NCP Top 40 Rankings. Of the 11 prospects ranked as 4-stars or better, five are headed to the Pac-12.
"I love the coaches. They have always been with me and recruiting me since I was a sophomore," Edwards said. "I want to be an orthopedic surgeon and (Arizona State) fits me academically."
Edwards is a defensive presence who showed development throughout her career. She has plenty of experience against top competition with Sac High and the Cal Sparks NorCal. Her offense is coming along, but she will make her first impact as a rim protector.
Reading the recruiting tea leaves were tough at times with Edwards, who is happy to be done with the process.
"That is the best thing about all of it," Edwards said. "It has been one of the hardest things I've gone through."
Looking ahead, Edwards will join former Berkeley standout Elisha Davis for head coach Charli Turner Thorne. The Sun Devils went 13-18 last year, including 5-13 in the Pac-12. They lost to Washington State in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. They return 6-foot-5 center Joy Burke, who averaged seven points and six rebounds last year.
