June 22, 2006 By Lee Hubbard Getting the jump on the top basketball talent in the country is something that the shoe companies and college coaches want to do. By getting the top players, shoe companies have the street credibility, while colleges want to know who the top players are so they know who to target and who they can recruit. This has created a boom in underclassmen shoe camps across the country, as they are looking for the top rising 9th and 10th grade basketball players across the country. Nike has the Hoop Jamboree for 9th and 10th graders, which takes place in St. Louis Missouri; Reebok has Camp Next for 9th and 10th graders, which takes place in New Jersey; and now Adidas has the Phenom 150 Camp June 23 through 25, in San Diego, California, at Alliant University for incoming 9th and 10th graders (registration is June 22). "Basically, the Phenom 150 is comparable to the other two shoe company camps, but the Phenom 150 is better," said Joe Keller, the founder of the Phenom 150 and Adidas Jr. Phenom Camps. "The Phenom 150 camp is a bridge between the Jr. Phenom camp and the big Adidas Super Star Camp." The Jr. Phenom Camp was a highly successful camp a few years ago and it is still ongoing for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders. The Jr. Phenom camp helped to show the power of grassroots youth basketball. Keller believes his Phenom 150 camp is a continuation, which will help to set up a basketball trail for college recruiters from middle school all the way through high school for top basketball talent. "This camp is an opportunity for kids who are not known on the grassroots basketball scene to be seen by top recruiting scouts," continued Keller. "It also gives them an opportunity to get a possible invite to the Adidas Super Star camp down the line if they stand out at the camp." The three-day camp will have over 360 kids, 180 in each class at the camp. Coaches, media representatives and people connected in grassroots basketball helped to select campers. While this is a down period where college coaches cannot come out and view the players, there will be various scouting and recruiting services present. Some of the scouts expected to attend the event include Clark Francis from Hoopscooponline.com, Dinos Trigonis from Fullcourt Press, Justin Young from Rivals, Californiapreps.com, ESPN the magazine and various other collegiate scouting and recruiting services. Players in the class of 2009 expected to be at the Phenom 150 camp include Dexter Strickland from New Jersey, Chris Byrd from Illinois, Rome Draper and Demetrius Walker from Fontana, California, DJ Byrd from Indiana, Joe Burton from Southern California amongst the high number of quality rising sophomores. In the class of 2010, players that will be there include Tony Chenault from Philadelphia, K.C. Ross Miller from Texas, Jarell Eddie from North Carolina and Trey Ziegler from Southern California. "Kids from all over the country, Canada and Japan and Germany will be present," continued Keller. "This will be a great event with great facilities and a great opportunity for kids to compete and play against the best players in their class from all over the country."
