Taft 14, Saugus 3 Taft Edges Saugus Behind Two Touchdowns From MorganBy Dave Rogahn D.J. Morgan rushed for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns, and the Taft defense made sure that was enough for the Toreadors (2-2) in a 14-3 victory over Saugus (1-3) Friday night at College of the Canyons. Morgan scored on a 30-yard run on Taft's first possession of the game, capping an 80-yard drive on which he accounted for 70 yards on 4 carries. And Morgan also scored the game's other touchdown on a 1-yard run to seal the win for Taft with 2:17 left in the fourth quarter. Otherwise, the game was dominated by the defenses. The Taft defense held Saugus to just 7 first downs on the night, and the Centurions didn't enter Toreador territory in the second half. Meanwhile, the Saugus defense held Morgan to just 66 yards on 18 carries after the opening drive and held Taft scoreless for more than three quarters. Saugus put together its one scoring drive of the night in the second quarter, reaching the Taft 3 after a 40-yard pass from Zackary Gauthier to Manny Padron got the Centurions into Toreador territory. But Saugus eventually faced a 3rd and 1 from the 3, and self-destructed with a pair of false start penalties, resulting in the Centurions having to settle for Padron's 27-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half. Taft had a chance to extend its lead early in the third quarter after Donnel Robinson intercepted a Gauthier pass near midfield and returned it to the Saugus 13. But a pair of penalties against Taft, the second of which negated a touchdown pass from Bam Goodall to Shaquille Shelton, stopped the drive, and Taft turned the ball over on downs at the Saugus 28. Neither team came close to scoring again until Taft's game-clinching drive in the final quarter. The Toreadors got the ball at their 45, and a 22-yard run by Shelton on an end-around got them deep into Centurion territory. A 17-yard pass from Goodall to Shelton gave Taft another first down, and a 13-yard run by Morgan got the ball to the 1. Two plays later, Morgan plowed through the line to extend Taft's lead to 14-3 with 2:17 left, all but clinching the win. With a minute left, Saugus had the ball deep in its own end when Donavyn Hardy was thrown for a 3-yard loss following a pass reception. In the aftermath of the play, Taft's Landon Dowell was ejected for throwing a punch, presumably in response to a personal foul that was called against Saugus. That was the 17th and final penalty of the night against Taft. With the win, Taft evens its record at 2-2. Saugus falls to 1-3 on the season and will travel to Encino next Friday to take on Crespi. Taft took the opening kickoff and drove for a TD with Morgan accounting for 70 yds on the drive. After that, the defenses took over. Saugus reached the Taft 3 late in the 1st half but after two penalties had to settle for the FG. Taft had a chance to score in the 3rd after Robinson's interception. He had just entered the game after sitting out the first half for disciplinary reasons. He returned his interception to the Saugus 13 but three plays later a penalty negated a Goodall TD pass to Shelton. But Taft eventually turned the ball over on downs at the 28. Neither team scored until Morgan's 1-yd run capped an 8-play drive to clinch the win. With a minute left, Dowell of Taft was ejected for throwing a punch. Saugus never entered Taft territory in the second half.
