Georgia cornerback gets good academic news
Denzel Nkemdiche got the news he's been waiting for Monday.
He celebrated by giving Ole Miss the news the Rebels had hoped they would hear.
Nkemdiche, a 6-foot, 206-pound cornerback from Loganville (Grayson), Ga., learned that he had _ as he suspected _ made a qualifying score on the SAT. The news came some 48 hours after Nkemdiche, who had at one point felt he was destined to begin his collegiate career at a junior college, committed to Ole Miss on the heels of an official visit to the Oxford, Miss., campus.
"I was just relieved," Nkemdiche said. "It felt so good. I was excited. You believe things are going to happen, but when it does, it's exciting."
Nkemdiche said he will sign a grant-in-aid with Ole Miss "at the end of the week." That decision, he said, is "final."
The Rebels' coaching staff, Nkemdiche said, was excited when he informed them of the finality of his decision.
"They were going crazy down there," Nkemdiche said, laughing.
Nkemdiche said he's hoping to be in Oxford in time for the start of the first summer session on June 1. Even if he signs papers this week, Nkemdiche wouldn't be locked into Ole Miss until he begins classes. That, technically, would leave the proverbial door open for Georgia. Nkemdiche, however, said the Bulldogs would be wasting their time.
"I told them I thought about going on an official visit, but I'm not going to," Nkemdiche said. "I'm set on where I want to go. I'm just going to train hard, take advantage of the opportunity in front of me and run with it. I want to learn the schemes, learn the playbook and get ready for the fall."
Nkemdiche said his younger brother, heralded defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche, was "excited" about Denzel's choice.
"He said he can't wait to get down (to Ole Miss) and see it," Denzel Nkemdiche said. "He said he hopes he likes it as much as I do. We want to play together."
Robert Nkemdiche will be a junior at Grayson this fall.
