The latest junior to receive a verbal scholarship offer from Ohio State is Kettering (Ohio) Alter quarterback Malik Zaire. Zaire has emerged this fall as a first-year starter at Alter and the Knights are rolling at 9-0 right now after a 35-7 win over Roger Bacon on Thursday night.
"Coming out we looked a little rugged," said Zaire of his team's early 7-0 deficit. "In the second half we had to come out more smoothly and I think we did that very well. The GCL championship is next week and that's important for us."
On a cold, windy, wet night in Cincinnati, Alter used its power running game to pull away in the second half. Zaire didn't complete a pass in the game and didn't attempt a pass in the second half.
"We try not to think about the weather," he said. "I think the weather effected my passes a little bit but I just need to put a little more velocity on it but I'll definitely get it next time and we'll be ready for the more crucial games that we need down the stretch and we'll complete those passes."
In the triple option offense, Zaire understands that on any given night a different player could be the one that carries the load and he was content playing the role of decoy in this win.
"A lot of teams are going to key on me and put a spy on me the whole game," he said. "We do what we can to use our other great players that we have in our offense. Our fullback had a great day today, he ran very hard. We saw they split out the linebackers to cover the option, and that's what a lot of teams do against us and it took a lot of strength for our fullback to run those plays hard and we had a lot of success doing that today."
Zaire also re-affirmed his plans to visit Ohio State next Saturday when they host Wisconsin. The two programs currently sit at the top of the list for his services.
"I think Wisconsin is doing really well, as everyone can see they're definitely rolling," he said. "It will be an exciting game to watch when the play Ohio State. Ohio State is picking it up after the slow start they had and they will always be fine, it's Ohio State so they find a way to win. Both teams are doing well so good luck to both of them."
