Simi Valley Tip Off Classic Recap

Sierra Canyon 84, Burbank Burroughs 60

By Jack Pollon

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Sierra Canyon boys basketball team got down to business and turned a six-point deficit into an 84-60 pool-play victory at the Simi Valley tournament.

Freshmen Cody Riley, Ira Lee, Adam Seiko and Terrance McBride were center stage for what promises to be an exciting year for the Trailblazers.

Riley scored 19 points, including several rim-rattling slam dunks, Lee scored 15 points and junior forward Robbie Feinberg scored 15 points.

Seiko and McBride each had seven points. Riley cherished his first ever high school game. "I know a lot of players get nervous," Riley said. "But I've waited for this my whole life. I was just happy playing the game."

Sierra Canyon was in for a fight, down 15-9 early in the first.

Burroughs standouts Amaad Wainright and Rashid Ewing were displaying their athleticism, experience and explosiveness. However, the duo didn't have much help and by the second quarter, the Indians were showing obvious signs of fatigue.

The Trailblazers used a 26-9 second-quarter advantage and a 19-1 run to start the second half to put the game away.

Sophomore Devearl Ramsey, who scored 12 points, praised the entire team. "My teammates picked it up," Ramsey said. "We turned it up the defensive intensity. It led to turnovers and easy baskets."

Wainright finished with 21 points, while Ewing and sophomore Steven Hubbell each had 14 points for Burroughs. Burroughs was outscored at one point 61-19. Sierra Canyon's biggest lead was 71-38.
