Chat with Washington

Modesto Christian guard Mason Washington is still waiting for his first scholarship offer, but has had initial talks with a multitude of schools.

"I'm hearing from Eastern Washington, Chico State, Cal State East Bay, SF State, University of Pacific," Washington said.

Whether Washington winds up at one of those five schools or somewhere else entirely remains to be seen, but either way Modesto Christian coach Richard Midgley said Washington's next team will be getting a quality player.

"He's a scoring point guard for us," Midgley said. "He does a real good job of getting us out in transition and getting us into our offense. He has a real good basketball IQ … He's highly skilled, he has an excellent pull-up game. When he's shooting it well he can really get going."

Although all those traits sound great, Midgley also stated Washington needs to become a more consistent player to thrive at the next level.

According to his coach, some days Washington looks like a mid-major guard and other days when he doesn't play his best.

"Things he needs to improve on is playing 100 percent at all times and I think he needs to improve on his defense, which he has been with us, but it could still get better."

While four of the five schools talking to Washington are local, Eastern Washington would be a bit far for the six-footer. Washington is open to going to school in Washington, but it does sound like he would prefer to stay close to home.

"Distance may be an issue, but if it's the right place and it fits, then so be it," Washington said.

However, Eastern Washington will have a chance to show Washington that it can be a home away from home on his visit.

"Haven't set up a date, but I'm going to visit Chico, East Bay and Eastern Washington," Washington said.

Washington is also unsure on when he will commit as he still has to take his visits and see if any late offers come in.

Midgley also did not know when Washington will decide on his future, but did state that there is plenty of untapped potential in the senior guard.

"I think there's a lot of room for growth with him," Midgley said.
