Mustangs undefeated no more

On Tuesday night the undefeated Monte Vista Mustangs traveled to San Ramon Valley to take on the Wolves in this cross-town rivalry game. In a matchup for the ages, neither team had the upper hand as there were countless lead changes. After a put-back shot from Gregg Polosky for the Wolves to send the game into overtime at 50-50, San Ramon guard Jerry Karczewski drained a three-pointer to win it for the Wolves, 59-56.

Coming into the game, Monte Vista was ranked 20th in the nation with an unbeaten record of 18-0. The all-around game put together by the Wolves helped place a loss in the Mustang's loss column, as Mater Dei is now the only unbeaten team left in the state.

The Wolves were led by a group of players that included Karczewski who went 6-for-10 shooting for 17 points and Polosky who had 11 points, a key slam dunk, and the shot to send the game into overtime.

Wolves junior guard, Keith Smith, locked up Monte Vista star Trevor John all night, holding the Cal Poly commit to five points on 2-of-7 shooting. Smith also commanded the court on offense as he picked up 14 assists.

"Pressuring Trevor wherever he was in the half court and having the mindset that he was not going to score on me really helped," Smith said.

Monte Vista was in the game from start to finish and actually looked as if they had the upper hand, but the Wolves just never gave up.

Mustang forward Spencer Rust went for 14 points and played a key role on the boards for Monte Vista.

It was as if this game was a part out of a movie we have seen before, Duke versus North Carolina. San Ramon and Monte Vista are around 10 minutes away from each other and a heated rivalry does exist.

It would only be fitting for the game to end on a winning three-pointer with three seconds left in overtime, leading to an upset. As the clock struck zero and the full court shot at the buzzer from John rimmed out, the San Ramon Valley 6th Man rushed the court, raising Karczewski off his feet.

As the Mustangs fled the gym, they were parted with Wolves fans singing "Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye" a true storybook ending.
