Rivals Camp Series Preview

The Rivals Camp Series lands in Northern California on Sunday with many of the region's top prospects in attendance. Who should you watch? Who will breakout?

Quarterbacks ready to shine: Quarterback recruiting is a different dynamic than other positions as the numbers game plays out on a national level. Foothill-Pleasanton product Kyle Kearns comes in as No. 9 in the country for pro-style quarterbacks. He recently picked up his first offer from SMU. Others to watch are Stellar Prep's Cameron Burston, Vista del Lago's Matt Jimison and Merced's Tyrone Williams Jr. Some of the best signal callers in the 2016 class will also be in attendance with San Ramon Valley's Kevin Davidson, Oak Ridge's Ian Book and De La Salle's Anthony Sweeney.

Next wave of Rivals250 prospects: Gone is 5-star prospect Joe Mixon, but the region boasts six prospects in the latest Rivals250 presented by Under Armour. Four of the six (De La Salle defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie, Granite Bay's Cameron Smith, Kearns and Cosumnes Oaks' L.J. Reed) will be in attendance. Foothill-Pleasanton's Isaiah Langley will be at the Rivals Camp Series in Southern California today. Folsom quarterback Jake Browning won't be in attendance.

Stellar Prep's star power: Burston will be joined by teammates Darrell Adams (wide receiver) and Chandler Gumbs (defensive back). All three players are in the preseason Top 100 for the state in making Stellar Prep the only NorCal program with three prospects on the list. The Thunder are 4-16 in their first two years of varsity football. Do the elite players at the top of the roster signal a trend up?

Offensive Linemen remain a strength: The offensive line is annually one of the best position groups in Northern California and Sunday will showcase some of the 2015 talent. Headliners include Dougherty Valley's Kieffer Longston, Grant's Darrin Paulo, Freedom's Dominic Fredrickson, Placer's Johnny Capra, Casa Grande's Brendan Jackson, Casa Grande's Peter Parrick, San Ramon Valley's Drury Samia Jr. and California's Tyler Whisenhunt. 2017 El Cerrito product Aaron Banks started for the North Coast Section Division III champions as a freshman and is a name to follow.

Other top players to watch: 3-star Campolindo tight end Tyler Petite is a fast rising recruit and could be in store for a big day at Chabot College. Milpitas defensive end Jason Scrempos is a 6-foot-6 defensive end with a lanky frame. Valley Christian-San Jose running back Kirk Johnson was the top playmaker in the West Catholic Athletic League last year and is the top returning running back in the region. Napa's Austin Aaron is a big target with Ivy League offers heading into the spring. Inderkum linebacker N.J. Falo is an early commit to Colorado. De La Salle's Simba Short is in line for an expanded role with the Spartans next year. Skyline linebacker Jacquese Steen is a bit of an unknown, but is ranked No. 89 in the state. Capital Christian's Justice Shelton-Moseley and Sacramento's Lonny Powell should be among the top recruits in the Sacramento area. San Leandro's Stephen Johnson III is one of the top athletes in Northern California.

2016 and beyond: It is never too early to look ahead to 2016 class. In addition to others previously mentioned, here are other juniors to watch for: Pittsburg linebacker Shurod Thompson, College Park running back Ray Jackson, Valley Christian-San Jose running back Morian Walker, Valley Christian-San Jose wide receiver Collin Johnson, Del Oro wide receiver Trey Udoffia, De La Salle tight end Devin Asiasi and De La Salle defensive end Boss Tagaloa.
