Bells shut out SI

Bellarmine met St. Ignatius for the second time on the season Saturday and unlike their first game, this time around the pitching was dominant. Bells ace, Corby Punian pitched a three-hit complete game shutout, leading his team to a 3-0 victory.

The Bells only had six hits on the day, but they made the most of their offensive production. Outfielder Alec Iniguez went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run and two runs scored, sophomore Kieran Shaw also knocked in a run on an RBI-double. Punian only allowed three hits and a walk on seven innings pitched, he also recorded nine strikeouts on the day as his performance earned him the win.

The Wildcats were held to a .130 batting average, they were dominated by Punian's pitching performance. Ryan Ward had a double and Logan Steinberg added a single, but St. Ignatius was not able to push any runs across. Junior pitcher Nicholas Simonian had a decent day on the mound, he gave up three runs in five and a third innings of work.

With the win, Bellarmine moves into fourth place in the West Catholic Athletic League standings. The boys from San Jose improved their record to 13-4 as they are now 6-4 in league play.

St. Ignatius drops to a record of 10-8, 5-5 in league play, they are now in fifth place in the WCAL, right behind Bellarmine. The Wildcats took the first meeting against the Bells by a score of 11-2, but they were not as lucky today.

Near the midway point of the season, the standings in the WCAL are getting extremely tight. If the Bells or Wildcats want to finish on top of this league, they will have to get past St. Francis, who sits alone in first place as of now.
