SJS playoff seeds settled
Elk Grove and Pleasant Grove wrap up league titles as the Sac-Joaquin Section finalized its playoff brackets. Also, Cal and San Ramon Valley were upset in the East Bay Athletic League.
Elk Grove won its 17th straight game with an 8-5 win over Davis to win the Delta Valley Conference. Davis is the No. 2 seed from the league and Franklin-Elk Grove comes in at No. 3. The DVC has produced the SJS Division I North winner in back-to-back years.
After dropping two of three games to Oak Ridge to start Delta River League play, Pleasant Grove has won 12 straight league contests to garner the top seed. The Trojans are the No. 2 seed and Folsom is a surprise playoff entrant. Jesuit is protesting a Wednesday loss to Oak Ridge, according to Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee. If the protest is successful, the Marauders will reach the playoffs but chances are slim it happens.
Vinny Esposito went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Connor Briare had nine strikeouts in seven innings as Granite Bay beat Rocklin (3-2). The win still leaves the Grizzlies No. 3 in the Sierra Foothill League, which sets up a Monday matchup with Davis. Rocklin takes the top seed and Del Oro comes in at No. 2.
The East Bay Athletic League saw a pair of upsets on Wednesday to leave De La Salle in sole possession of first place. Will Theofanopolous had a game winning home run in the seventh inning to lead Foothill-Pleasanton past San Ramon Valley (2-1). For the first time since 2009, Livermore has four league wins after knocking off California (4-3). De La Salle has San Ramon Valley and California in two of its last three games.
River Valley beat crosstown rival Yuba City (No. 1 in Division III) for the first time in school history on Tuesday, according to the Appeal-Democrat. The Honkers bounced back with 22-0 and 7-6 victories to win their 10th straight league crown. Devin Pettengill scored the game winning run in the finale. The senior is hitting .474 with 14 RBI.
With a 7-1 win over Montgomery, Carrillo clinched the North Bay League title and its 18th straight win. The Pumas have losses to Clayton Valley Charter and Petaluma while holding nine league opponents to less than two runs. Carrillo plays Cardinal Newman on Friday.
Leland took over the lead in the Mount Hamilton Athletic League with an 8-3 win over Willow Glen. Former co-leader Leigh fell to Branham (8-6). The Chargers will try to clinch an outright league title on Friday against Willow Glen.
