John Wooden wrote "Bruce Randall must have been a disciple of Mother Teresa, who said, 'a life not lived for others is not a life'" These are truly words that we should all strive to live up to.
Who is Bruce Randall? Those that know Orange County basketball history will quickly answer that Bruce Randall was a big man with a big heart who unselfishly dedicated his life to his passions—basketball, and helping others. Bruce's motto was truly "Service Before Self." In his 27+ years coaching in the Orange County community and particularly at Cypress College, Bruce never received nor did he ask for any personal recognition or economic reimbursement for his time spent helping, mentoring and teaching others.
When Bruce died on February 2, 2000 he left friends, fans and students of the game of basketball to carry on his life and legacy. His many friends included John Wooden, Don Johnson, Tom Lubin, Mark Eaton, Swen Nater and Mark Campanaro to name only a few who were forever touched by his life and death.
So far in its brief history, The Bruce Randall Foundation has conducted free basketball clinics for at risk kids, numerous basketball clinics on the Soboba Indian Reservation, individually mentored, and tutored or provided one-on-one basketball training for a variety of now nationally recognized college and professional basketball players. In addition, the foundation has provided computer equipment to needy students, paid living expenses and tuition for student/athletes, sponsored journalism scholarships and annually funded scholarships at variety of high schools in the southern California area.
Our most recent project is the adoption of Danbrook Elementary School in Anaheim, California. We are involved in a collaborated effort to raise funds to support mentoring, recreational and educational programs. The school is positioned an area with demographics of multiple housing units and families who struggle to make ends meet. The poverty rate is 87% as evidenced by the rate of students receiving free or reduced lunch.
It is well known high crime rates and high unemployment lead to higher risk factors such as gang affiliation, increased crime rates and higher absenteeism at all grade levels. There are limited after school education and sports opportunities in the area. Additionally the majority of parents within the school boundaries are unable to afford costs associated with tutoring or extracurricular recreational opportunities for their children.
If Bruce were here, he would make an effort to do something about it.
The proceeds from our Golf Tournament and the basketball clinic will be used to fund the schools first after school sports program. If you are interested in attending or donating please contact us.
