Drew League Game of the Week:
The Clozers 107, The Soleclinics 84By Dave Rogahn
2014 McDonald's All-American Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei/Arizona) continued his strong play in the Drew League this past Saturday, but he and his team, the Soleclinics, were no match for 2008 McDonald's All-American and current Detroit Piston Brandon Jennings, who exploded for 57 points to lead The Clozers to a 107-84 win.
The Drew is the West Coast's premier pro-am league, meaning players of all levels of experience, from high school to college to professional to retired, can participate in a league known for its high level of competition. Last season such NBA dignitaries as Kevin Durant and James Harden stopped by, and in the past The Drew has seen the likes of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant make appearances.
Saturday, the marquee game saw Jennings and current San Antonio Spur Austin Daye taking on Johnson, current Sacramento King forward Derrick Williams and the rest of the Soleclinics. The gym at King-Drew HS filled just before tipoff as word spread that Johnson and Jennings were on hand.
The Clozers jumped out to a quick double-digit lead, and led by as many as 19 points in the first half before holding a 12-point advantage at the break. In the third quarter, however, Johnson led the Soleclinics' rally, which cut the deficit to just four points on two different occasions, and it was a 6-point game entering the fourth quarter.
Then Jennings, who starred at nearby Dominguez HS for two years before heading to Oak Hill, then Italy and then the NBA, simply took over. In the final 8 minutes, he scored an astounding 26 points, including 4 three-pointers, and The Clozers once again took over the game.
Jennings finished 17 for 37 from the floor for the game to score the 57 points, easily the highest point total in The Drew this season. That included 8 three-pointers, and he also had 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. It was the most points scored in The Drew since Nick Young scored 60 three years ago, when the league was still playing at the Washington Park Rec Center.
Daye also had a tremendous game, scoring 21 points and grabbing 20 rebounds while adding 3 assists, 3 blocked shots and 2 steals. Chimezie Metu, a 6-9 forward at Lawndale HS, class of 2015, also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Former NBA point guard Marcus Williams, who played in Russia last season, had 9 points and 6 assists.
For the Soleclinics, Johnson was outstanding with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists. He scored at least 30 points in two of his first three Drew League games this season before heading off to help USA Basketball's 18-and-under team capture the FIBA Americas Championship (he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player).
Derrick Williams, who played at La Mirada HS and the University of Arizona before being drafted 2nd overall in 2011 by the Minnesota Timberwolves and traded to the Sacramento Kings this past winter, had 17 points. Former Washington State point guard Reggie Moore had 16 points and 6 assists, and onetime Arizona State guard Steve Moore had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Play continues in The Drew every weekend into August, with games beginning at 10 am on both Saturday and Sunday at King-Drew HS in Willowbrook. There are 7 games each day, and admission is free. For more information check the league website at http://www.drewleague.com/.
