The Pepperdine-bound Schultz finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the triple double. St. Mary's signee McCoy added 21 points, 16 rebounds and 8 steals. And the junior Vittallo made 7 three-pointers en route to a game-high 30 points as the trio combined for 71 of Canyon's 75 points.
Canyon (23-4) started the game with a 12-0 run, and led, 23-4, early in the second quarter. Channel Islands (20-6) settled down after that, but never got the deficit into single digits. And Channel Islands trailed by just 12 midway through the third quarter, when point guard Danielle Brown picked up her 4th foul. Though she stayed on the floor Canyon pulled away with another 12-0 run.
Canyon used its pressure to get the early lead, as well as a few 3-pointers. Schultz made the game's first basket, a 3-pointer, of course. Then Vittallo hit three 3-pointers to push the lead to 12-0 in the first five-plus minutes of the game. At that point Channel Islands was 0-for-5 from the floor with 7 turnovers.
Lahni Salanoa finally got Channel Islands on the board with a driving lay-up, but Canyon pushed its lead to 17-4 by the end of the first quarter. Then Schultz hit another three to start the second quarter, and scored on a lay-up after a steal by Monica Freidl to make it 22-4. A free throw by Vittallo after a steal by McCoy pushed the Canyon lead to 23-4.
Channel Islands settled down a bit after that. Brown got them into double digits with a 3-pointer that made it 27-11. Another lay-up by Salanoa brought Channel Islands within 14 at 30-16, and a putback basket by Tabitha Cunanan made it 30-18 with 1:20 left in the first half.
But then Brown picked up her 3rd foul of the game with 8.3 seconds left in the first half. Schultz made two free throws for Canyon to make it 32-18 at the break. Channel Islands stayed close early in the second half, and got within 10 points at 32-22 after a steal & lay-up by Salanoa. And Channel Islands still trailed by just 12 points at 40-28.
But then Brown picked up her 4th foul of the game with 3:35 left in the third quarter. She stayed on the floor, and never did pick up her 5th foul. But the effect on both teams was substantial as Canyon immediately went on a 12-0 run to re-take control of the game.
Another 3-pointer by Schultz pushed Canyon's lead beyond 20 points to 49-28 with 2:10 left in the third quarter. A steal by McCoy - her 5th of the third quarter and 7th of the game - and a free throw completed the run, pushing Canyon's lead to 24 points at 52-28.
Channel Islands cut the margin to 17 points at the end of the third quarter, after a 3-pointer by Brown at the buzzer, but that would be as close as the Raiders would get. McCoy scored a pair of baskets and Delaney McCann hit a jumper for Canyon, and Vittallo scored on a lay-up off a pass from Schultz to push the lead to 25 points at 60-35. Another Vittallo 3-pointer, her 7th of the game, pushed the lead beyond 30 points, making it 73-42 with 1:40 left.
Brown finished with 18 points for Channel Islands, and added 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Salanoa had 11 points plus 3 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 2 steals, and her twin sister Leah had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
