Girls War On The Floor All-Star Game Report

East 69, West 59By Dave Rogahn
Madison Federici (Glendale Adventist) scored a game-high 22 points and also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the East to a 69-59 victory in the Girls' game of the first-ever War On The Floor Small Schools All-Star Games Saturday at St. Genevieve HS in Panorama City.

Federici and Zoe Goss (Sierra Canyon) were each outstanding for their respective teams. Fortunately for the assembled crowd, they were on opposing teams, and the result was a competitive game (though the East held a lead virtually the whole way) and the chance to see several excellent players from schools that are often below the radar during the regular season.
The East used an 8-0 run to take a 14-7 lead early on, and built a 26-12 lead after a long 3-pointer by Federici midway through the first half. But the West rallied to cut the margin to just five points at 31-26 at the half following a 3-pointer by Montana Ellis (Sherman Oaks C.E.S.) near the end of the first half.
The West cut the margin further early in the second half, making it 31-30 after a driving lay-up by Goss. But then Melissa Chan (Holy Family) stopped the momentum with a 3-pointer for the East, and the East started to pull away again. A lay-up by Federici made it 46-35.
The West got within eight points several times, but never really threatened to catch up. A jumper by Federici stretched the lead back to 14 points at 66-52 with just over five minutes left and put the East in control, though the West kept the margin from getting any larger.
Federici earned M.V.P. honors with her game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, and she also had 4 steals. Chan had 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals, and Kristie Kawamoto (Providence) had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Point guard Hhala Aboul-Hosn (Village Christian) had 5 points and 4 assists, but she also grabbed 7 steals, helping the East amass a stunning total of 26 steals for the game.
For the West, Goss had a very strong game with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 5 steals. Brooke Tarver (La Reina) had 13 points and 7 rebounds, and Sabrina Zarifi (Heritage Christian) had 11 points and 9 rebounds. Yasmeen Pelayo (Chavez) provided a spark off the bench with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Three-point Shooting Contest:At halftime, four contestants took part in a 3-point shooting contest, and Melissa Chan emerged as the winner with a most impressive performance.
The format was unique in that two shooters competed simultaneously - one at each basket - and each shooter had one minute in which to make as many 3-point shots as possible.
But the unique twist was that each shooter had just one ball to use, and had to do her own rebounding.
In the first round, Chan and Brooke Tarver were the contestants. Tarver took a quick 4-0 lead, but then Chan came on strong to make five shots in the last 30 seconds.
The other two contestants were Sabrina Zarifi and Sabrina Reyes (Vaughn Charter), and they each made just 2 shots.
So the final was a rematch between Chan and Tarver. But this time it was never close. Chan made a rather remarkable total of 7 shots in one minute - a total matched only by the Boys' 3-point winner, Luca Ferrari (Notre Dame) to easily win the contest.
