Championship Game: Kennedy 54, Glendale 42 (OT)
Kennedy of Granada Hills outscored Glendale 15-3 in overtime to claim a 54-42 decision and win the 2004 Vaquero Summer Tip-Off Tourney. Brandon Burnside scored 6 of his game-high 15 points in the extra session, and added a game-best 8 rebs in the championship game. His 2 FTs with 1:38 left in OT put Kennedy ahead, 43-41, and Glendale never caught up. Robert Valentine nailed a runner to make it 45-41, and then Aaron Clarke scored a 3-point play on a lay-up and FT to make it 48-41. Following a missed three attempt by Glendale's Len Khechumyan, Myon Sample corralled the rebound and was fouled. His 2 FTs made it 50-41 and pretty much sealed the win for Kennedy.

It was an intense, hard-fought game throughout. Glendale jumped out to a 12-9 lead early on, largely on the inside strength of Chris Hovanesepian's 4 points in the early going. Kennedy rallied to take a 13-12 lead and held a 24-20 advantage at the half. Early second-half baskets by Clarke and Burnside extended Kennedy's lead to 28-20, but Glendale rallied on the strength of 5 FTs by Hamlet Hovanessian to tie the score at 30. The game continued to be close, and was tied at 36 when Burnside made 1 of 2 FTs with 1:04 left in regulation to give Kennedy a 1-point lead. Glendale's Raymond Dagher also made 1 of 2 FTs to tie the game at 37 with 33.3 secs left. After a missed shot by Kennedy's Clarke gave Glendale the ball again, Dagher again was fouled and also again made 1 of 2 FTs. That gave Glendale a 38-37 lead with 20.6 seconds to go. Then Clarke responded by nailing a jumper with 12 seconds left to give Kennedy a 39-38 advantage. Glendale had one last chance, and the ball went to Hovanesepian, who tried a desperation three. The ball barely touched iron, but it landed in the hands of Glendale's Dagher, who was fouled as he tried a last-ditch shot. The horn sounded just after the whistle blew. That left Dagher all alone at the foul line, with 2 shots; if he made both, Glendale would win the tourney, but if he missed both victory would belong to Kennedy. The first attempt rimmed out. Then, facing the pressure of keeping his team alive, he drained the second FT to send the game to OT.
In addition to Burnside, Kennedy had a pair of scorers reach double figures: Rodney Davis, who had 11 points plus 5 rebounds, and Valentine, who had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Sample had a superb game at point guard for Kennedy, dishing out 7 assists and committing just 1 turnover. Dagher led Glendale with 13 points, while Hovanessian added 12. Dagher and Hovanesepian tied for team honors with 5 rebounds. Theo Minossian dished out 4 assists, and Len Khechumyan grabbed 4 steals.
3rd Place: Monroe 71, Pasadena 65
In the third-place game, Monroe won an entertaining 71-65 decision over Pasadena. Brandon James led the way with 23 points and 9 rebounds, while Bonilla (sorry, no first name available – I did well to get all the last names) hit 6 of 8 shots, including 3 threes, for 15 points. And Monroe won despite a marvelous game from Pasadena's Artis Gant. He made 11 of 22 shots, including 5 threes, for 28 points, the highest total in any of the day's games. Plus, he added 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Pasadena led at halftime, 31-30, but Monroe rallied to take the lead in the second half. A three by James gave Monroe a 66-57 lead and appeared to put the game away, but then Gant nailed a pair of threes to get Pasadena back into the game. A bucket by Deon Williams made it 66-65 with 23 seconds left. Monroe pushed the lead back to 3 at 68-65 on a basket by George Johnson with 6.9 seconds left. Then Pasadena had a Chris Webber moment, calling a timeout it didn't have a la the Michigan Wolverines in the 1993 National Championship game. The resulting technical foul gave Monroe a point (on a free throw by James), the ball and, following 2 more free throws by James, the victory.
In addition to James and Bonilla, two other Monroe players scored in double figures: Johnson, who had 12 points, and Chewy Velasquez, who had 13 points and 5 assists. Stu Mhrogum came off the bench to have a very strong game with 5 points and a best-of-the-day 9 assists. In fact, he was the Monroe bench; they had just 6 players available. Pasadena's Chris Marshall had the day's only double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. D. Williams had a solid game with 4 points, 6 assists and 3 steals.
5th Place: LaSalle 54, Hoover 47
In the fifth-place game, LaSalle of Pasadena broke open a tight game late to top Hoover of Glendale, 54-47. Troy Baugh's three with just under 2 minutes left broke a 47-47 tie. Ben Trousdale scored a basket on a feed from Ben Brekke to make it 52-47 moments after Brekke had forced Hoover's Sevak Khodagholian to travel near midcourt. Trousdale made a pair of FTs with 17.4 seconds left to push the lead to 7 and secure the win for LaSalle.
Brekke led LaSalle with 12 points, including a pair of threes, and dished out a game-high 5 assists. Trousdale added 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Scott Jones had 8 points and a game-best 6 rebounds, while Baugh and Mike Noyes scored 6 points each. For Hoover, most of the scoring came from their tough front line: PF Grigor Odjakian had 17 points while Ctr Zare Zargaryan had 16 points, a game-high 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
7th Place: Reseda 59, Temple City 49
In the seventh-place game, Reseda raced past Temple City's attempt to push the pace and jumped to a 36-20 halftime lead en route to a 59-49 win. Brian Brooks led the way with 14 points, while Phil Roberts dominated the inside with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Edwin Herrera had 6 points and 6 assists, and Joel Choave had 4 points, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Temple City was led by Calvin Lee, who had 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, all team-highs. Steve Soong had 18 points including 4 threes.
9th Place: Grant 48, Alhambra 40
In the ninth-place game, Grant of Van Nuys got a huge game from Mike Danielian to get past a stubborn Alhambra team, 48-40. Danielian scored 21 points, including 4 threes, and added 6 rebounds. No other player on either team reached double figures. Brandon Jasper did an excellent job of running the Grant offense, distributing 7 assists and committing just 2 turnovers, which were offset by his 2 steals. Mike Garcia came off the bench to lead Alhambra with 9 points. Art White had 7 points and 6 rebounds.
In the opening game, Marshall of Los Angeles topped Verdugo Hills, 58-39. Marshall's Paraschiy put on a show with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Teammate Touch added 11 points, while Esqueta had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Sean Martin led Verdugo Hills with 13 points. Edward Aydinyan had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.
