Norvel Pelle scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds, 7 blocked shots and 3 steals to lead Los Angeles College Prep to an 81-72 win over Middlebrooks Academy in the 3rd place game of the 2013 West Coast Prep Championships at Cathedral HS.
The onetime St. John's signee put on his usual spectacular aerial show Sunday afternoon, but also avoided foul trouble and stayed on the floor, making a huge impact on the game. He was just one of five players to score in double digits for L.A. Prep, which is directed by longtime L.A. City College and former Ribet Academy coach Mike Miller.
Middlebrooks Academy, coached by another former Ribet Academy coach - William Middlebrooks, used a late 10-2 spurt to take a 35-33 lead late in the first half, and the teams were tied at 37 at the break. But in the second half, L.A. Prep gradually pulled away, building a 13-point lead with just over five minutes to play and holding a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Brandon Williams scored on a lay-up with about six minutes to play to push L.A.'s lead to 70-59, and Isaiah Hicks scored off a pass from Providence HS alum Patrick Gonzalez to push the margin to 13 points at 72-59. Middlebrooks Academy cut the deficit to six points with 3:46 to play, but L.A. pushed the margin back to double digits with a slam dunk by Pelle and a driving lay-up by Tre Hunter, and was not threatened after that.
Brandon Tanter equaled Pelle with 16 points and added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals for L.A. Prep. Gonzalez, the 2011 California HS state scoring leader, had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, and was named to the all-tournament team. Hunter had 10 points and Hicks came off the bench for 11 points.
For Middlebrooks Academy, Jack Karapetyan led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-12 from the floor, and added 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Derrien King had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, and Idrissa Diallo had 10 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, 2 blocks and 4 steals. Former Serra (Gardena) point guard Marc Rodgers had 7 points and a game-high 9 assists.
