Shaqquan Aaron had 24 points and Brandon Perry had 23 points and 9 rebounds to lead Taft to an exciting 84-75 win over Alemany in an emotionally-charged game in one of the highlights of the day at the Joe Frazier Benefit Showcase at Calabasas HS.
Alemany jumped out to a 17-9 early lead, but Taft answered with a 20-2 run to take a 29-19 lead midway through the first half. Taft held a 44-38 lead at the break, but Alemany tied the score early in the second half after a steal & lay-up by Marqueze Coleman, who then drained a 3-pointer to give the Warriors a 49-46 lead. A 3-point play by K.J. Moffett made it 54-48.
Shortly after that, things got a little chippy. There had already been some chatter - Coleman and Kris Yanku had been assessed matching technical fouls in the first half - and Moffet was ejected for a hard foul with 10:21 left.
Taft tied the score at 60 on a 3-pointer by Aaron, and seemed to start to pull away, pushing the lead to eight at 72-64. But Alemany rallied one more time, cutting the margin to 76-75 with just over three minutes left. At that point, Coleman was assessed a technical foul.
Due to some confusion between the scorer's table and the officials, he was allowed to stay in the game a little longer, but was finally removed with just under three minutes left.
And that finally doomed Alemany, who had already lost starter Moffet and was without two-sport standout Jerico Richardson, who is busy with football. The short-handed Warriors saw Taft put the game away with a putback basket by Perry and a 2-point free throw by Yanku in the final minute to account for the final margin.
Aaron led the Toreadors with 23 points on 9-for-13 from the floor, including 4 threes, and added 7 rebounds. Perry had 23 points on 9-for-13 and the game-high 9 rebounds. Teyvon Myers came off the bench for 9 points and a team-high 5 assists.
For Alemany, Bear Henderson led all scorers with 27 points on 9-for-13 with a pair of 3-pointers, and he also had 6 rebounds. Coleman had 17 points on 8-for-12 and added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Moffet and point guard Max Guercy each had 11 points; Guercy dished out a game-high 8 assists.
