Trinity Classical Academy (10-4, 2-1) led virtually all the way, opening a 24-point lead early in the third quarter, but neither side's fans lost even the slightest amount of enthusiasm, making for a most festive atmosphere in the small gym.
And though both schools are fairly small, each is on the upswing on the SoCal basketball scene. Trinity entered the night ranked #4 in Southern Section Division 6 rankings, while Santa Clarita Christian (6-6, 0-2) was ranked #14 in the most recent Southern Section Division 5-A poll.
Trinity jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and led virtually the entire game. Brooks converted a 3-point play on a putback of his own miss with 3:17 left in the first quarter to make it 12-7. Phillip Webb answered with a putback with 1:50 left to make it 12-9, but then Trinity started to pull away.
The Knights pushed their lead to seven points when Klehn scored on a driving lay-up with 39 seconds left in the quarter and drew a foul. He missed the free throw, but Brooks grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made one of two free throws to make it 17-9. Chris Collins scored for the Cardinals in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 17-11.
Collins scored again for Santa Clarita Christian in the early moments of the second quarter to cut the deficit to four points at 17-13. But then Trinity went on a 12-0 run, pushing the lead to double digits, where it stayed the rest of the game. Klehn was fouled after a rebound and made two free throws to push the Knight lead to 11 points at 24-13 with 5:49 left in the first half. Brooks made one of two free throws with 4:50 left and Marco Escribano scored on a lay-up to make it 29-13 with 4:20 left in the second quarter.
Trinity led by 18 points at the half at 35-17, and quickly increased its lead in the third quarter. Klehn scored on a putback to make it 37-17 in the opening seconds. Escribano hit a pull-up jumper to make it 39-17, and Michael Mateo added a jumper to make it 41-17.
Santa Clarita Christian cut the deficit to 17 points on a Webb 3-pointer that made it 45-28. Webb made one of two free throws with 3:18 left in the third quarter to make it 47-31, and Webb cut the margin to 14 when he scored off a pass from Alec Robinson to make it 49-35. Then Webb cut the deficit to 12 points on a steal & lay-up that made it 49-37 with less than 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
But Trinity never let the Cardinals get any closer. Klehn scored off a pass from Brooks, was fouled and made the free throw with 6 seconds left in the third quarter to push the lead back to 15 points at 52-37. The Knights pushed the lead back to 18 points on two free throws by Andrew Pabalan with 5:41 left in the fourth quarter that made it 56-38, and Escribano made a Tony Parker-type floater to push the lead back to 20 midway through the fourth quarter.
Klehn led all scorers with his 25 points, and added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Brooks had 17 points plus the game-high total of 17 rebounds, and added 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Escribano had 11 points.
For Santa Clarita Christian, Webb had team-bests of 20 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Collins had 9 points and 10 rebounds, just missing the double-double before fouling out with 2:47 left.
