Ventura County Girls All-Star Game Report

East 83, West 64By Dave Rogahn
Geraldynn Leaupepe (Camarillo) scored 26 points to earn Player of the Game honors, and her twin sister Geralynn Leaupepe scored 12 to lead the East to an 83-64 victory in the 2014 Ventura County All-Star game Friday at Pacifica HS in Oxnard.

It's not always easy to distinguish between the identical twins, who were named co-MVPs of the Pacific View League, co-Players of the Year for Ventura County and co-MVPs of the Battle of the Valley All-Star game in April. And they're both headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to continue their playing careers next season.
But for one night, Geraldynn - or "Dynn" - was the standout, making 9 of 13 shots from the floor for her game-high 26 points and adding a team-high 8 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, a game-high 5 steals and 2 assists.
Still, Geralynn - or "Lynn" - was the winning team's second-leading scorer with her 12 points, and her 6 rebounds were exceeded only by Dynn among players on the East squad.
The East took control of the game early on, going on a 14-2 run after the West jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage. Late in the quarter Kayalin Irby (Ventura) scored a pair of baskets to bring the West within four points at 15-11, but Pepperdine-bound Kim Jacobs (Agoura) knocked down a long 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer to give the East an 18-11 lead after one quarter.
From there, the East expanded its lead in the second quarter and led handily the rest of the way.
Dynn Leaupepe pushed the margin to double digits with a 3-pointer that made it 29-17. Alex Brunk (Newbury Park), Dynn and Brooke Zamora (Royal) each scored to push the margin to 35-17, and Kailee Severt (Oaks Christian) pushed the East's lead to 20 points at 39-19 with 1:35 left in the first half.
The West scored the final three points of the first half to cut the deficit to 39-22 at the break, but the East quickly pushed the lead back to 20 when Lynn scored off an assist from Dynn to make it 53-33 midway through the third quarter.
It was 63-42 at the end of the third, and the East held a comfortable lead the last ten minutes.
In addition to the Leaupepe sisters, the other double-digit scorer for the victorious East was Severt, who had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Brunk had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Overall the East generated 20 steals while committing just 13 turnovers, a very low total for an all-star game.
For the West, Marki Meyer (Ventura) scored a team-high 21 points, which included 3 three-pointers, and she added 9 rebounds and a game-high 5 assists.
Christina Gonzalez, playing in her home gym at Pacifica, had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Cassandra McCambridge (Ventura), the tallest player in the game at 6-1, scored 7 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
