Watching 6-8 Terren Frank vs Loyola High this year I came away feeling one word: Impressed. This great kid has poise, skill, heart, handle, grit.
Check any box you want, he's getting there and the coolest part - T-Frank was only a freshman this year! This starting freshman on Harvard Westlake's CIF 1A championship team has transferred to the nationally ranked Sierra Canyon.
I've watched Terren ball for the Nike Phamily AAU team lately and I'm been even more impressed with him as a baller. I've gotten to know him as a person and now my respect for him is at a whole new level!
He will play in the Nike Peach Jam with Marvin Bagley III next month.
Terren is a 4.0 student, golfs and plays the piano, but he's joyful as he plays NBA 2K and Call of Duty with his friends.
He's passionate about balling as I ask him what do you like about hoop, "I like the constant competition aspect of basketball, getting out there to compete at all times is my goal."
I ask how do you feel when you're on the court? He says "I feel great. I just think about the game when I'm playing. I try to play each game the same way, bring the skills I've learned to each game."
Now you see this kid has focus, he's a throw back baller. There are no frills, no hocus pocus.
I talk to Terren's father, Tellis, who was an outstanding college baller and was a NBA draft lottery pick in 1987. This man truly cares for his son - he's been there so he guides him, offers advice to help Terren actualize his potential.
Terren relates, "My goal is for me to be more intense on defense, get quicker, be more athletic. My dad and Jimmie Burton are two coaches that have helped me shape my hoop game."
Dope family, dope future. #100
Terren's mom Melanie, a lawyer, is as equally nurturing as Tellis. She gets my unequivocal respect because she supports her son - there's so much pride in her voice when she speaks of him.
Terren speaks on his mom, "My mom supports me on how to learn and helps me focus on school. I appreciate that both my parents always remind me, ‘It's not how you start, it's how you finish.’"
I ask what the future holds for Terren, "I'm looking for a good college education and a school that's close to home. I don't have a list, I just want to play on a big stage, give it my all to be a top recruit and 5 star player. I have big dreams to play in the NBA like my father did."
The words come out of this young man's mouth with clarity and confidence. Terren speaks in earnest, like his awesome father, straight forward. If you put in the work, ignore all the hoopla, enjoy the game, the challenge of refining the skills will be its own reward.
I really enjoyed talking with Terren Frank, I learned he loves my favorite TV show, Breaking Bad. I see a bright, bright future ahead for him and it'll be an honor to do his story again, to watch him bloom into a stellar player.
He's just that dude you appreciate meeting in life because he's filled with so much life. #100.
