Jack Pollon's comments:
Although we didn’t have a chance to really sit down and watch entire games all day there were some players and teams that caught our eye.
Team 1
Monte Evans from Oaks Christian in Westlake village is physically getting there and could blossom into a force for the young lions this season. We were very impressed with Charlie Carmichael from Notre dame of Sherman oaks. Carmichael is a big kid with nice moves around the basket and a soft touch. He must play football as well. He has a chance to develop into a true power forward in the San Fernando Valley. Two incoming ninth graders really caught our attention. Dallas Rutherford from Hillcrest Chr. in Granada hills plays with the poise and experience of a junior already. He made some nice plays that changed the outlook of his games. As well Cavanaugh Thompson will be at Chatsworth next week and is another big kid who is very intriguing.
Team 2
Richie Polan from Buckley in Sherman oaks will challenge Cedric Latimer of Windward of Los Angeles for liberty league most valuable player next season. Polan, fresh off of helping team los Angeles take gold at the maccabi games in Boston has a great game already. Polan reminds us of Brad Miller. A workhorse who can score inside or hit the 15-18 foot shot. Also an above average rebounder. Finds a way to get it done. Jon Sebastian is very versatile and should be a great role player for Greg Hilliard at Harvard Westlake. Little Mike Sweeney from Hart high can shoot it well and although he looks like he could suit up for the junior high team don’t be fooled. He will be a good one for Tom Kelly over at Hart in the next few years. We got our first look at Hamid Ford from Animo Leadership charter in Inglewood. Ford is a hard-nosed player who led his team in scoring as a freshman. Heady point guard who can score.
Team 3
Chatsworth will be young next season but Michael Palarca, Jeffrey Osborne, Michael Koziol, Jonathan Shields and Thompson will bring it to the floor every time out. We were also pleasantly surprised with Drew Mazur. A 6'4 long and lanky kid who can play on the perimeter. Should be the best player at Milken community next year. Very good, smart player.
Team 4
Jimmy Hirschmann and Marcus Payne are two of the many very good young players at Loyola of Los Angeles. Hirschmann is 6'5 and can shoot the three. He also plays football. Payne, along with Marcus Johnson and incoming freshman Vernon Davis will make Loyola good for years to come.
Team 5
This was the Orange county Timberwolves club team. Comprised of mostly incoming freshman going to Mater Dei, El Toro and Tustin. Competed well and held their own despite giving up almost a full year in age.
Team 6
This was probably the most talented team in the showcase. Durrell Norman really caught our attention. At 6'4 and physical he will be a good one for Serrano of Phelan high school. He teams with Harrison Gaines up there to give them one of the best high desert teams next season. Kyli Crooms and Kyle Lewis who both go to Silverado of Victorville are good guards who play hard. Three Campbell Hall standouts caught our eye. Justin Holiday and his brother, incoming freshman Jrue. And Robert Ford, brother of senior to be standout Joe. Robert will give senior to be point guard Steven Tolbert a run for his money as starting point come season time. The Holiday brothers are great. Athletic, explosive, smart and disciplined. Campbell hall should have a great team next year and look to win its first southern section championship since 1994.
