SF Tyler Carr scored 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds and sophomore PG Alex Cohen had a strong overall game to lead a hot-shooting Thousand Oaks (10-5) to a 76-59 win over host Valencia (10-5) January 2nd. Carr made 10 of his 12 shots on the night, and Cohen finished with 9 points, 9 assists, 6 steals and just 1 turnover for the winners. The Lancers shot 61% from the floor in the second half, and 50% on the night, and also managed 15 pts from the FT line compared to only 4 by Valencia.
Valencia led much of the first quarter as their press created some easy baskets, but by halftime Thousand Oaks had taken a 7-point lead at 36-29. Valencia began the second half by closing the gap to 37-34 on a three by SG Alan Husted and a basket by PG Tony Ker, but then the Lancers responded with an 10-2 run to take a 47-36 lead. Valencia still trailed by 11 at 70-59 when Husted fouled out with 1:33 left, which basically ended any chance the Vikings might have had for a late comeback.
Valencia lost despite an excellent game by Husted, who made 12 of 16 shots (including 3 threes) to finish with a game-high 27 points, plus 4 steals. But the rest of the Vikings shot just 28% (12 of 43) and only Ctr Chad Allan managed to score in double figures (10 pts, 5 rebs). SF Jason Lott had a strong game off the bench with 9 pts and a team-best 5 assists and 3 steals.
For Thousand Oaks, other top performers included PF Brandon Dempster (17 pts, 4 rebs) and SG Chad Acerboni (9 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts, 4 steals). Ctr Matt Luft had 11 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.

Santa Barbara Holiday Classic: Championship game: 12/30/2003

Championship Game: Dorsey 54, Santa Barbara 48
By Rachel Friesen
With both teams coming off great games to get into the championship game, Dorsey and Santa Barbara came out with their eye on the goal. Dorsey jumped out to a 4-0 lead; Santa Barbara came out missing their first three baskets. At first it looked as though Santa Barbara was feeling the affects of the game the night before when they had to go into overtime to win against Dos Pueblos. But once again Taylor Rochestie came up and nailed a trey. The first quarter finished with a score of 14-10 in favor of Dorsey.
It was Jonathan Heard with a nice post up to open up the second quarter. Then a Dorsey player grabbed a steal then dished it to Heard and Rochestie picked up his third foul and had to come out of the game. Heard converted the two free throws and single handedly boosted Dorsey's lead to 11 by half time by scoring 12 of their 18 points in the second half. (With the score being 32-21.)
Things didn't look good for SB in the third quarter when Heard came out and smashed on them right away. But Santa Barbara came out fired up ready to challenge Dorsey for the title, their defensive intensity propelled them back into the game they cut the lead down to 8, allowing Dorsey to only score 7 points. Taylor also picked up his fourth foul. Score 39-31 after three.
Only seconds into the fourth quarter Heard went down with what looked like an ankle injury or a cramp, whatever it was it didn't keep him out long. SB's David Noelle came out and hit two jumpers to cut the lead to 4. Dorsey elected to start running out the clock and ran it down to eight seconds when they got an AND 1. The lead kept bouncing up and down from eight to four and never got any closer then that. Dorsey won with the final score being 54-48 (Dorsey held Taylor Rochestie to 10 points)

Santa Barbara Holiday Classic: Third place game 12/30/2003
Oxnard 68, Dos Pueblos 66
By Rachel Friesen
Dos Pueblos came out on fire hitting four three pointers in the first quarter surprising Oxnard by taking a 28-17 lead going into the second quarter. The Dos Pueblos bench came in and kept up the intensity: Alex Ciambrone got a steal then converted the lay-up. Johnny Iden came in and grabbed a steal and drained two treys. David Magid also came in and grabbed a steal then layed it in to end the half.
At the start the second half DP turned the ball over and Oxnard's Henry Patterson got the easy 2. DP started to press but it didn't do much good as Oxnard was patient and broke it easily and went right into their offense. But just when it looked like DP was about to go on another run #42 came out of no where and swatted Jelani Hicks. Oxnard got a couple of stops and it looked as though they would cut into the lead but they couldn't convert on any of their baskets. The score at the half was 42-25.
Oxnard came out of the half time break ready to kill. They opened up with a 15-2 run sparked by Patterson with 8 pts and Stephan Wiggins with 9 pts. The third quarter score was 52-48 with DP still on top. But Oxnard hit two treys to go ahead by 2. Junior Phil Friesen stepped up and hit 2 FTs to tie the game up at 54. Next Hicks and Jason Dalley worked the in and out, with Dalley posting up and kicking it out to Hicks for the three. Throughout the quarter the teams played fairly even. Friesen came out of a timeout draining a trey from about three feet beyond the arc, then Oxnard's Wiggins hit his fourth three of the night to put his Yellowjackets up by 2. Then the two teams traded baskets. DP got the ball and called a timeout with 21 seconds left.
DP went to their clutch player Friesen, who had come through in crunch time the night before by hitting two threes to send the game into OT. They ran a play for Friesen who muscled his way through four defenders and converted the tough four footer. Oxnard called a T.O. with six seconds left. They came out and set up in a four across press break but to their surprise DP elected not to press and fell back into a half court trap. Oxnard was able to dribble the ball up the floor with no problems; DP got the trap but someone on defense forgot to rotate down and cover the basket, Wiggins saw the opening and got the assist to the winning layup from # 12, handing the Chargers their second heartbreaking loss in a row.
Game high: Phil Friesen 25 points.
