SILVER BRACKET CHAMPIONSHIP
Alemany 52, Thousand Oaks 49
Theo Edwards again led here with 16 points but only one of seven from the free throw line. Alex Baltazar's three pointer from the top of the key was the difference late in the game. Senior to be Shane Poppen had 15 to lead Thousand Oaks.
Addendum from Dave Keefer: This game was one of the most exciting of the tournament so let’s look at the final moments. With the score 43-43, Alemany’s Brenden Wheeler hit a big 3-pointer from the corner. But Alemany got called for a crucial intentional foul at the other end to send Matt Luft to the line. He hit one of two to make it 46-44 with Alemany still in the lead. During the free throw attempts the Alemany players were at their bench talking to the coach, no time out was taken. Thousand Oaks retained possession after the FTs and got set for the inbounds pass under their own basket. Alemany was very slow in returning to the court and the ref put the ball in play. T.O. got an easy uncontested layin to tie the game at 46-46.
Alemany stayed cool as Alex Baltazar hit one of two FTs and Theo Edwards followed with a soft baseline jumper. Alemany led 49-46. With time winding down, Shane Poppen drained a 3 to tie it for 1000 Oaks. Baltazar immediately responded with a matching 3-pointer to put Alemany up 52-49 and end the scoring. T.O. had a couple of chances to tie. Poppen got a good look with 18 seconds left but missed; then T.O. got the ball back near their own basket with 3 seconds left and called time out. A desperation shot missed and Alemany claimed the Silver.
San Pedro 57, Huntington Park 25
John Bobich's Pirates got 14 points from Junior to be Carlin Ocean in the Gold Bracket quarterfinal win.
El Camino Real 59, Renaissance Academy 55
Sharp Shooter Ron Levy scored 15 points to lead the Conquistadores playing without standout Seniors Jordan Warren and Kelvin Patterson. Little Marcus Lewis had 13 points and is the heart of the team. This kid never quits and plays hard all the time out there. Leif Williams scored 21 points and Archie Robb had 14 to lead the Wildcats. Renaissance Academy should make the Division 5-A Championship Game next season easily.
Granada Hills 49, San Pedro 47
Michael Schindler scored 20 points as Granada Hills advanced to their third consecutive Slam Jam Tourney Final. 6'8 Savoy Fraine did not play for G. Hills again.
Montclair Prep 46, El Camino Real 27
The Mounties are back and ready to go for another Southern Section title in 2004-2005. Guards Marlon Yates and Bobby Webb, Jr. each scored 13 points as the Prep continued its winning ways. Freshman to be Jin su Kim added eight points and showed again he is one of the top freshmen in all of Southern California. Senior to be Demaurier Walker had 10 for El Camino Real.
GOLD BRACKET CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
MONTCLAIR PREP 55, GRANADA HILLS 41
Marlon Yates scored 17 points and Junior to be Craig Partovich had 14 as Montclair Prep has not lost since June 26. The Mounties took the Silver at the War on the Floor, the Palm Springs Tournament with wins over Muir and Riverside Poly and now the Slam Jam end of summer tourney. As well, they went undefeated at the Los Angeles Baptist Summer League. Jared Dacey scored 17 points to lead Granada Hills. Tough luck for Sean Collyer's squad. They have lost three championship games this summer. They are now officially the Buffalo Bills of High School Basketball.
