Getting a win over a nationally-ranked foe usually is enough to keep a team in the national rankings, but not this week for the boys' team at Christ the King High of New York.
Unfortunately for the Royals, sandwiched around a 92-87 double overtime victory over Holy Cross of Flushing, N.Y., which was No. 20 in last week's FAB 50, were two losses to unranked Bishop Loughlin of Brooklyn. Christ the King was No. 9 in the nation coming into last week.
All three of those teams have now beaten each other twice so instead of trying to figure out which of the three should be in the FAB 50 it was better to drop out both Christ the King and Holy Cross from this week's rankings until further results clear up the picture.
The biggest beneficiary of Christ the King's and Holy Cross' departure was Wheeler of Marietta, Ga. The Wildcats moved up from No. 31 to No. 16 after their 98-84 win in two overtimes over previously unbeaten Word of God Academy of Raleigh, N.C. The Holy Lions also had risen to No. 14 in last week's FAB 50.
The highest mover among this week's newcomers is new No. 46 Mt. St. Joseph of Baltimore. The Gaels avenged one of their two losses last week with a 61-51 win against St. Frances Academy of Baltimore and one week before that lost by just three points (73-70) to national power Oak Hill Academy.
This week's other newcomers are Boyd Anderson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Marshall of Chicago, Ill.; and Simi Valley of Simi Valley, Calif.
Here are this week's Rivals.com FAB 50 national rankings:
1. St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) 15-0 (1)
The Friars used a balance attack as four players scored in double figures, led by Rutgers recruit Mike Rosario with a game-high 21 points, in a 90-32 pounding of Christian Brothers in the Brian Doherty Classic. Coach Bob Hurley's squad only has one game showing on the schedule for this week with a matchup against Neptune.
2. Duncanville (Duncanville, Texas) 28-1 (2)
The Panthers, winners of 67 of their last 68 games, rolled in two District 8-5A games last week. Duncanville easily downed Arlington Lamar in its first game last week, 89-39, after leading by 17 points (21-4) after one period of play. Juniors Roger Franklin and Shawn Williams combined for 33 points in the easy win. The next game for the defending Class 5A state champs was just as easy as they led 18-4 after one quarter and went on to rout Arlington Sam Houston, 51-33, behind Williams' team-high 19 points. This upcoming week the Panthers, which have lost only to No. 5 Oak Hill by a point, face a Cedar Hill team they beat by a 72-67 score only two weeks ago.
3. Yates (Houston, Texas) 21-2 (3)
Similar to No. 2 Duncanville, the state's top-ranked Class 4A team rolled in its two district games last week. Darius Gardner (20 pts.) and Joseph Young (16 pts.) led the way in a 107-68 victory over Houston Washington in District 20-4A play. Later in the week, the Lions won by 100 points (133-33) after leading 43-12 against an overmatched team from Houston Austin. Brandon Peters nearly outscored Washington by himself as he netted 29 points.
4. St. Benedict's (Newark, N.J.) 17-1 (4)
Junior Tamir Jackson scored 13 of his game high 17 points as the Grey Bees defeated Passaic Tech, 59-47, in the Brian Doherty Classic. Louisville recruit Samardo Samuels sat out the game because head coach Danny Hurley said "I wanted him to." St. Benedict's goes up against two teams from Pennsylvania this week – Hill of Pottstown and Harrisburg.
5. Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) 21-3 (5)
Arizona recruit Brandon Jennings led the Warriors with 21 points and seven assists in a 71-66 win against The Miller School. Jennings, who started out as a freshman at Dominguez High of Compton, Calif., looks like a finalist for the EA SPORTS National Player of the Year honor.
6. Chester (Chester, Pa.) 19-1 (6)
The Clippers defeated Penn Wood, 82-70, as Kevin Green-Germany had 27 points. Junior Nasir Robinson then scored 22 points to led four players in double figures as the Clippers defeated Academy Park, 87-63. They also defeated Harrisburg last week, 74-68, as Rahlir Jefferson had 16 points. Chester plays Jeannette and football All-American Terrelle Pryor on Friday and also plays Philly area power Roman Catholic on Saturday.
7. Rice (New York, N.Y.) 13-2 (7)
The Raiders won their only game of the week as they defeated Archbishop Molloy, 88-52, as Connecticut recruit Kemba Walker had 20 points. Rice plays previous FAB 50-ranked Holy Cross on Tuesday of this week and on Friday meets up with FAB 50-ranked St. Raymond's.
8. St. Patrick's (Elizabeth, N.J.) 15-2 (8)
Junior Dexter Strickland scored 20 points, while Kansas recruit Quintrell Thomas added 14 points, as the Celtics won their only game this week against St. Joseph of Montvale, 50-37. The Celtics will face FAB 50 ranked Fairfax in the Nike Extravaganza in Los Angeles on Saturday.
9. LeFlore (Mobile, Ala.) 25-2 (10)
Alabama's top-ranked team, and defending state Class 6A champion, dominated Davidson by 80-52 last week. Nick Williams scored 18 and 6-foot-10 junior DeMarcus Cousins contributed 17 points. The Rattlers continue their tour of out-of-state events with the upcoming Montverde (Fla.) Academy Invitational where they will take on Westlake of Davie, Fla., in the quarterfinals.
10. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 23-0 (11)
In their first week as the top-ranked team in California, the Monarchs topped Servite of Anaheim, 79-61, and then JSerra of San Juan Capistrano, 77-63. David Wear, the team's 6-10 junior post player, has missed some time with an injury but should be ready this week when Mater Dei plays FAB 50-ranked league rival Santa Margarita and then on Saturday hosts Farragut of Chicago (14-3) at the annual NIKE Extravaganza.
11. St. Raymond's (Bronx, N.Y.) 14-2 (12)
The Ravens were idle this past week as they prepare to hopefully avenge one of their two losses against Rice on Friday. The topsy-turvy nature of New York prep basketball is unmatched anywhere in the country, which is expected with the abundance of the great competition and great players in the region.
12. Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) 17-1 (13)
The defending state Division 1 champion Crusaders won three games vs. Cincinnati area teams last week to retain their top ranking in the state poll. Moeller defeated state-ranked Withrow, 60-57, rival Elder, 58-52, and Roger Bacon, 63-36. Michael Davenport scored 25 and 20 in two of the wins.
13. Norcross (Norcross, Ga.) 18-1 (15)
The two-time defending state Class AAAAA champion chalked up three easy in-state victories last week over Peachtree Ridge, 64-29, South Forsyth, 61-47, and Mill Creek, 70-43. Al-Farouq Aminu, a Wake Forest recruit, scored 26 and 20 points in two of the routs.
14. Saginaw (Saginaw, Mich.) 15-1 (16)
The defending state Class A champion Trojans avenged their lone season loss in a big way by romping past city rival Arthur Hill, 82-54. Daniel West led the way with 25 points and Draymond Green had 13 points and 18 rebounds. Arthur Hill won the first meeting, 63-56. Earlier in the week, the Trojans won at Ohio-ranked Libbey of Toledo, 80-76.
15. Simeon (Chicago, Ill.) 18-2 (17)
The two-time defending state champion Wolverines continue to impress with three wins last week. Public League victories came over Bogan, 40-30, and Julian, 54-37 plus a victory over Webster Groves (Mo.) by 57-41. Robert Robinson, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, has impressed in recent outings.
16. Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) 20-2 (31)
The Wildcats continue to move up the ranking charts with impressive outings. Last week, the four-time state champion team handed FAB 50 ranked Word of God (N.C.) its first loss, 98-84, in overtime. Earlier, Wheeler bested city rival Kell, 87-65. Wheeler remains unbeaten vs. instate teams with losses only to FAB 50 No. 2 Duncanville, Texas, and a Nevada prep school, Findlay.
17. Ferris (Spokane, Wash.) 16-0 (18)
Erick Cheadle's steal and layup with 2:36 left gave the Saxons the cushion they needed in a 53-50 win last week over Shadle Park. The close game was expected as Shadle Park is another of the top-ranked teams in Washington. Jared Karstetter had 19 points to lead the scoring as Ferris won its 45th straight league game. This week's games are against University and Gonzaga Prep.
18. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) 18-1 (19)
Colin Chiverton pumped in 32 points as the Monarchs held off Serra of San Mateo, 68-65, in a West Catholic Athletic League game. Mitty also won last week, 76-64, over Bellarmine of San Jose. This week, head coach Brian Eagleson's team plays three league opponents, starting off with St. Francis of Mountain View.
19. Word of God (Raleigh, N.C.) 19-1 (14)
North Carolina's top-ranked team dropped its first decision last week when FAB 50 ranked Wheeler of Marietta, Ga., outlasted the parochial team, 98-84, in overtime. Earlier in the week, Word of God defeated Flora McDonald, 92-40, and Trinity Christian Academy, 70-55.
20. Taft (Woodland Hills, Calif.) 17-3 (21)
Eugene Phelps scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds in three quarters while Larry Drew dished off 19 assists, one short of the school record, in a 90-44 romp last week over Chatsworth. Taft also won last week, 79-28, against crosstown El Camino Real and went down to San Diego on the weekend and beat Torrey Pines, 76-48, which is the second highest ranked team in that county. This week's foes are Granada Hills and Cleveland of Reseda.
21. Dominguez (Compton, Calif.) 18-2 (22)
Jordan Hamilton put on a show with 38 points and had 13 rebounds in a 94-78 win over Gahr of Cerritos last week that just about wrapped up a league championship. Myron Green, a 6-4 junior, also is coming on for the Dons and had 25 points in the same game. This week, Dominguez plays Downey and Paramount.
22. South Atlanta (Atlanta, Ga.) 20-1 (23)
The Hornets added two easy instate wins last week over Clarkston, 88-23, and North Atlanta, 88-43. Touted junior Derrick Favors had two monster games while combining for 47 points, 42 rebounds and 24 blocked shots in the two games.
23. Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 15-2 (24)
The defending PSAL champion Railsplitters won their only game of the week as they defeated former FAB 50 ranked Holy Cross, 81-60. Junior standout Lance Stephenson scored a game high 27 points for the Railsplitters.
24. Benedictine (Richmond, Va.) 20-3 (25)
The Cadets won their only game of the week by defeating Christchurch School, 70-40. They play Norfolk Collegiate and T.C. Williams of Alexandria in this week's games.
25. Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) 13-2 (26)
Junior sensation Terrell Vinson almost single-handedly outscored Booker T. Washington of Washington, D.C., in the Mustangs' 104-29 pounding. Vinson scored 28 points for the Mustangs in the rout. The Mustangs also escaped with a 48-45 win last week over Friendship Collegiate of Washington, D.C., as Vinson scored a game-high 19 points.
26. Oregon City (Oregon City, Ore.) 15-1 (27)
The Pioneers had just one game last weekend but it was a big one in more ways then one. Entering the game against league rival and also unbeaten in league Lake Oswego, the Pioneers had lost eight straight against a Lakers team that previously had current UCLA phenom Kevin Love. This time, though, it was a convincing 63-40 road win. Leading by a single point, the Pioneers blew the game open with a 17-8 third quarter and a 20-7 fourth quarter led by Brad Tinsley with 17 points. Looking to remain undefeated and in first by themselves, they will play host this week to Putnam and Milwaukie.

28. Fairfax (Los Angeles, Calif.) 17-3 (29)
Coach Harvey Kitani's team will be in the featured game at this Saturday's NIKE Extravaganza against FAB 50-ranked St. Patrick's of New Jersey. In last week's games, the Lions cruised to wins over Hamilton of Los Angeles and University of Los Angeles even though standout 6-10 junior Renardo Sidney didn't suit up in one of those games due to a disciplinary action. Sidney will be needed this week for sure if Fairfax can get past St. Patrick's.
29. Westchester (Los Angeles, Calif.) 20-3 (30)
The Comets also are in the NIKE Extravaganza and should have a tough test against De La Salle of Concord, which is No. 11 in this week's CalHiSports.com state rankings. They won last week 74-56 over Palisades of Pacific Palisades and 88-51 over Hamilton of Los Angeles. Sophomore Dwayne Polee stood out against Palisades with 24 points.
30. North Crowley (Fort Worth, Texas) 27-1 (32)

32. McClymonds (Oakland, Calif.) 20-0 (34)
Despite not playing after last Monday's 44-42 win over De La Salle at an MLK Day event, the Warriors moved up two spots in this week's FAB 50 due to other teams losing. McClymonds returns to Oakland Athletic League play this week with games against Fremont and Skyline.
The Vikings have now won five straight since suffering their first loss of the season to Young by two points as they defeated Lockport 70-56 and Sandburg 60-41. There was no stopping Kevin Dillard as he exploded for 28 points in the opening game of the week. Against Sandburg, Dillard had 14 points and five steals. Continuing Southwest Suburban League play this week, Homewood-Flossmoor takes on Stagg and Bolingbrook.

37. New Albany (New Albany, Ind.) 16-0 (41)
This team continued to dominate in the Hoosier State with two more wins last week. First, Braydon Hobbs scored 11 first-quarter points and Donnie Hyde had 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks in a 82-48 road win against Evansville North. In likewise blowout fashion, the Bulldogs ended the week defeating Jasper 76-37 as TeNale Roland scored 17 and Hobbs scored 10 to go with nine assists.
38. Ridgeway (Memphis, Tenn.) 18-1 (43)
The Roadrunners tuned up for this week's season rematch with Kirby by winning two games vs. Memphis foes, Raleigh-Egypt and Overton. Kirby owns the only season victory over Ridgeway with a 67-65 decision in early January.
39. Bryan Station (Lexington, Ky.) 19-1 (44)
Kentucky's No. 1 ranked team is also the hottest. The Defenders have hiked their win streak to 19 games and by an average margin of nearly 30 points. The Defenders last week routed Henry Clay, 93-60, and Tates Creek, 98-74. Against Creek, Selvin Mack scored 28 points and Dacoby Burnett had 26.

41. Klein Forest (Houston, Texas) 24-2 (46)
The Eagles have now won 12 straight games since a five-point loss to Cypress Springs on December 10. Last week, they played only once, edging Spring 74-71 after beating that same club by 15 points (78-63) at the beginning of January. The difference in the game turned out to be Klein Forest's 19-11 advantage in the first quarter, as it led 57-56 entering the final period and held on for a three-point win. Chris Hines was the team's leading scorer with 21 points while Toure Murry added 20.
42. Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.) 15-0 (47)
Scoring just over 83 points per game, the Royals look like they'll be hard to stop as they picked up two more wins last week to remain undefeated on the season. Despite trailing early by eight to one loss Cretin-Derham Hall, the Royals regained the lead by as many as 15 before halftime and at one point led by 23. Raymond Cowles led scoring with 21 and John Nance had 17 points. This has been a team on fire as the Pirates have now won 13 in a row after their lone game last week that resulted in a 71-57 win over Edmond North. The host, and defending champion, takes on Groveland South Lake in the quarterfinals. 46. Mt. St. Joseph (Baltimore, Md.) 20-2 (nr)
In the last two weeks, the Gaels have stamped themselves as a team to watch on the national stage. First came a three-point loss to No. 5 Oak Hill Academy. Then came a 61-51 win over St. Frances of Baltimore that avenged their only loss. This week's opponents are Goretti of Hagerstown and Loyola Academy of Towson.
47. Starkville (Starkville, Miss.) 20-1 (39)
