Drew League: Nick Young debuts and leads team to victory

Franklin Session had two huge games, including another triple-double, Baron Davis’ BB4L squad improved to 10-0 and Nick Young scored 25 points in his debut with his new team to highlight the penultimate weekend of The Drew League.

Session (Jordan-LA/Saddleback/Cal State LA/NBDL) had 30 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for Birdie’s Revenge in a 106-82 rout of LA Loop on Saturday as the Birdies set a new Drew League high for points scored in a game.

Then on Sunday, he had 23 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and 6 steals to lead Birdie’s Revenge past Sky Ryse. 84-76. The wins lift Birdie’s Revenge into second place, a game ahead of defending league champs LAUNFD with a game left on the schedule.

Session also had a triple-double June 11th and is probably the frontrunner for Drew League MVP. Justin Johnson (Citrus/Condordia/NBDL) led Sky Ryse with 17 points.

BB4L got 21 points from Toronto Raptor forward Terrance Ross and 15 from league MVP contender Van Girard (Gahr/Cerritos/CS Dominguez Hills) and routed Salvatori’s No Shnacks, 80-55, on Sunday. Sango Niang (Summit/Chaffey/Simon Fraser/France) had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for No Shnacks.

The win clinches the John Williams division championship for BB4L.

Also on Sunday, LA Laker Nick Young (Cleveland/USC) joined his new team, #Juglife, and scored a game-high 25 points in an 89-73 win over Hank’s Clozers.

Sek Henry (Lynwood/Nebraska/overseas) had 23 points and The Manimal, Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets, had 21 points and 8 rebounds for #Juglife.

Dwayne Polee (Westchester/SD State/NBDL) had 21 points, including 4 three-pointers, for the Clozers.


Other Week 10 Highlights:Patrick Rembert (Lakewood/UC Irvine/Mexico), who leads The Drew in scoring, had another big weekend with 27 points on Saturday and 33 on Sunday as LA Loop split the two games.

Ryan Anderson (LB Poly/LB State) had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Loop on Sunday in an 89-69 win over Salvatori’s Nova Stars…Pooh Jeter (Serra/Portland/NBA/China) and John Lucas III (Oklahoma State/NBA/Spain) each scored 27 points for LAUNFD in a 97-91 win over Salvatori’s Spirit.

The Spirits let a 16-point first-half lead get away in this showdown for a share of second place in the Stanley Dill division.

Dejean Prejean (Mayfair/LA City/Cal State LA/overseas) had 22 points and Roderick Williams (Price/East LA CC) had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Spirits…The CitiTeam Blazers also own a share of second place after an 86-49 throttling of CABC in which Jordan Bell (LB Poly/Oregon) and Garrett Nevels (Palisades/Mt. SAC/Hawaii/Spain) each scored 15 points.

Hank’s Houdini’s All-Stars added Austin Daye (Woodbridge/Gonzaga/NBA/Turkey) and won two games, handing first-place Redemption its first loss of the season on Friday and routing Hank’s Bulldogs, 89-74, on Saturday. Daye had 36 points in the win over the Bulldogs.

Victor Rudd (Van Nuys/South Florida/NBDL) had 34 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists to lead Problems to a 92-86 win over the I Can All-Stars on Sunday…David Nwaba (University/Santa Monica/Cal Poly SLO) had 24 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals for the Pandas in a 77-74 win over One Culture.

Jordan Crawford (Xavier/NBA/China) scored 25 points and fed Mike Ojo (Crossroads/Lehigh/Czech) for the winning basket in COA’s 77-76 win over Hank’s New Image. Reigning Drew League MVP Vince Camper (Cal State LA/Mexico) had 36 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a losing cause.

Kerry Carter (West Covina/Citrus/St. Mary’s/Germany) scored 23 points and Chuck Garcia (Dorsey/Riverside/Seattle/Bahrain) scored 17 in Redemption’s 92-82 win over Salvatori’s ICEO on Saturday. Detroit Pistons’ forward Andre Drummond had 25 points and 21 rebounds for ICEO.

The final weekend of the regular season is August 6 & 7, with a total of 15 games, starting at 10 am each day. Admission is free but it will fill up as the day progresses.
